Hello, it's Friday and that means it is time for another discussion. Today I want to know what your favorite ratings for your games are. Now, obviously, some of you probably haven't given this much thought. After all, not many people actively go for a particular rating, and what constitutes a particular rating in an RPG can be a bit difficult to fathom. For a general guide, go with the movie ratings if you will.
For me, I think my favorite is PG-13. While I do sometimes like delving a bit deeper and darker, I find PG-13 gives a good blend of tension breakers, darkness, serious tones, and solid aciton. You can get away with a lot of deep, dark, and tense story moments with PG-13 as long as you control the presentation, and that control I think can help keep the game focused on the main point instead of gratuitous depictions of ultraviolence, gore, or sex.
How about you?
I am usually a PG-13 kind of a DM I guess, obviously with all of the violence in D&D I was never going to get less than a PG rating without making it cartoonish, and I like to keep things more on the realistic, if somewhat grimly heroic side of tone. Sometimes I may stray into R territory, but that's more of a judgment call, it's usually because of a weird/horror sword & sorcery element that slipped in.
